Joe MacPherson moved to Orange County in 1958 and opened his first dealership, Joe MacPherson Chevrolet, in San Clemente. Over the years he developed his dealership holdings and pioneered the growth of auto malls.
A noted philanthropist, he donated over $2 million to Orange County schools. He was also avidly involved as a sponsor and participant in a diverse range of motorsport activities, including the car that his son Jeff raced in the 1987 Indy 500.
A motoring industry icon, Joe MacPherson was a passionate car enthusiast who spent his life devoted to buying, selling and restoring collectible automobiles. His beloved 'Joe's Garage' - a private automotive museum and banquet facility in Tustin, California - served as a timely memorial
to his passion and the southern California car culture.
"For California hot rodders and Orange County natives, the name Joe MacPherson is instantly recognizable," said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions. "As the founder of numerous auto dealerships and a distinguished philanthropist, Mr. MacPherson was as much an astute
businessman as he was an active member of his community.
"In addition, Mr. MacPherson was also a passionate collector, acquiring an impressive collection of historic, sports, racing and custom motor cars, over his lifetime all of which were proudly displayed at his famed Joe's Garage," added Kelleher
